The main aim of the LiWeFor twinning project is to establish and develop a global network of Living Labs of wetland forest research, education and management. The project team consists of the University of Helsinki and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology as top-class research counterparts and the University of Tartu as the recipient. As a driving vehicle of the project, four joint field campaigns to global greenhouse gas emission hotspots in tropical wetland forest regions (Peru and Malaysia) will enforce educational knowledge transfer.

In addition to training, this exploratory research component binds together other activities from all partners. It will also serve as a proof-of-concept for testing the virtual framework of LLs that will enable hybrid formats of skills transfer, teaching and training on a remote mode. LiWeFor addresses the need to raise the level of expertise among researchers and decision-makers in Estonia systematically. The twinning partnership project will bring expertise from countries with top-level forest ecosystem research - Germany and Finland, particularly focusing on enhancing career awareness, enabling a capable workforce, and promoting science-related careers.

LiWeFor-i põhieesmärk on luua ja arendada ülemaailmne Living Labsi võrgustik soometsade uuringuteks ning vastavasisulise hariduse edendamiseks. Projekti juhtivaks organisatsiooniks on Tartu Ülikool, osalevad ka eriala juhtivad teadlased Helsingi Ülikoolist ja Karlsruhe Tehnoloogiainstituudist. Kaasatud ka soometsade uurijad Peruust ja Malaisiast, kuhu korraldatakse kokku neli ühisekspeditsiooni. Need hõlmavad nii soometsade süsiniku – ja lämmastikubilansi mõõtmisi vastavates välijaamades, samuti seminare kohalike teadlaste, spetsialistide ja üliõpilastega. Kavas on ka hübriidsed (füüsilise osaluse ja videosilla vahendusel toimuvad) seminarid nii Tartu, Helsingi ja Karlsruhe teadlaste vahel, samuti on osa seminaridest suunitletud Peruu ja Malaisia uurijatele ja üliõpilastele.

LiWeFor kui teadus- ja haridusprojekt võimaldab tipptasemel Soome ja Saksamaa teadlaste abiga tõsta Eesti ekspertide oskuste taset, samuti kaasata üliõpilasi ning kohalikke organisatsioone soometsade kui olulise maismaa süsinikuvaramu uurimisse ja lahenduste leidmisele nende ökosüsteemide jätkusuutlikuks ja süsinikuneutraalseks majandamiseks.
